Youth Opening Act: Olive Eve Fortune

Olive Eve Fortune

Olive has been playing the violin for almost eleven years and she is committed to her instrument and to sharing the gift of music with everyone she meets. While Olive has primarily been playing classical music, and is part of three orchestras, she has a deep appreciation for all genres of music, as they have shaped who she is today. She has always had a soft spot in her heart for fiddle music, but her favorite style is contemporary and modern.

Main Act: Big Space

Big Space

Big Space is an instrumental progressive jazz trio from St. John’s, NL. Formed in 2013, the band features guitarist Grant King, bassist Ian Murphy, and drummer Ashley Chalmers. Their 2021 album “In Relation To” was acclaimed in Canada and abroad, with Jazz Journal UK praising it as “a brilliantly original album”, and it is nominated for ECMA Jazz Recording of the Year.

Big Space plays an original mix of jazz and rock, with a focus on live improvisation. They have performed at prominent festivals like Lawnya Vawnya, Music at Harbourside, the Sound Symposium, and the Wreckhouse Jazz Festival. Impressed with the live feel of “In Relation To”, The East wrote “Their style lives in the sweet spot for Music Festivals, combining intricate musicianship and uplifting moods”.

In 2022, Big Space received the Gerry Porter Award for Creative Improvised Music at Sound Symposium XX. They were also nominated for MusicNL Instrumental Artist of the Year and selected for a showcase performance at MusicNL’s 2022 Music Celebration Week. The band is currently recording their next studio album. Photo: Ritche Perez

Music @ is a series of free concerts that take place from June 10 through September 22 in a variety of locations across the City. Our signature event – Music @ Harbourside – runs throughout the summer, during the lunch hour on Fridays. It takes place in Harbourside Park, off Water Street in downtown St. John's.

Many musical styles are featured including folk, rock, pop, traditional and country. Each concert opens with a talented youth performer from our partner, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society.

These performances help to showcase the remarkable and diverse musical talent on offer in St. John's.

Relax with family, friends or coworkers and enjoy your lunch break or have some weekend fun. It's like running through a sprinkler on a hot day – refreshing, fun, and sure to make you smile!
